230 Week 7: The Wolf in the Cage (The Reservation, The Agent, a

Here is the comprehensive lecture script for GOR 230, Week 7.

This is the final lecture of the Red Savages module. It deals with the aftermath of defeat. It is not about the glory of the charge or the tragedy of the massacre, but the slow, crushing reality of confinement. It examines the "Reservation System"—the administrative solution to the "Savage Problem."

Lecture Script: GOR 230 - The Red Savages

Instructor: Magistrate Kati Evans Location: Gorean College of Lara / Ar’s Station Educational Hall Week 7: The Wolf in the Cage (The Reservation, The Agent, and The Assimilation) Duration: Approx. 60 Minutes

◈═══════════════════════◈

I. Introduction: The End of the Horizon (00-10 Mins)

(Action: The room is claustrophobic today. You have moved the desks closer together. On the main desk sits a bag of moldy flour and a pair of iron shears. You stand behind them, looking tired.)

Magistrate Evans: Tal.

The war is over. The Firesticks won. The Ghost Shirts failed. The Kaiila are dead or sold. The Kailiauk herds are gone.

What do we do with the survivors? We cannot kill them all (that is bad for the soul of the city). We cannot let them roam free (that is bad for trade).

So, we draw a line on a map. We say: "You may live here. But you may not leave."

Today, we study the Reservation. It is not a prison with walls. It is a prison of geography. We will look at the Dependency Economy (replacing the hunt with the ration). We will look at the Indian Agent (the bureaucrat who holds the keys to the food supply). And we will look at Assimilation—the attempt to "kill the Savage to save the Man."

Open your tablets. We are visiting the cage.

II. The Geography of Confinement (10-25 Mins)

Magistrate Evans: Where do we put them? We do not give them the fertile river valleys. We want those for farms. We give them the Badlands. The rock. The dust.

The Boundary: The Reservation has a border. If a Savage crosses the line to hunt, he is a "Renegade." He can be shot. If he stays inside, he starves.

The Psychosis of the Cage: Imagine a people who have moved 50 pasangs a day for a thousand years. Suddenly, they are trapped in a box. The depression is absolute. The warriors sit by the fire. They do not fix their weapons. They do not paint. They just wait.

◈═══════════════════════◈

III. The Weapon of Flour: The Ration System (25-40 Mins)

(Action: Pick up the bag of flour. Drop it heavily on the desk. Dust flies up.)

Magistrate Evans: You cannot hunt in the Reservation. There is no game. So, how do they eat? We feed them.

This is not charity. It is control. The Indian Agent (an official from the City) distributes the rations.

Beef: Often rotten or skeletal cattle.

Flour: Often weevil-ridden.

Blankets: Often smallpox-infected (accidentally or on purpose).

The Power Dynamic: If a Chief speaks out? His band gets no flour. If a warrior refuses to cut his hair? His children get no beef. Hunger is a weapon more effective than the cavalry charge. It breaks the spirit of the father by starving the son.

◈═══════════════════════◈

IV. The Death of Culture: Assimilation (40-50 Mins)

(Action: Pick up the shears. Snip them menacingly.)

Magistrate Evans: The ultimate goal is not just to contain them, but to erase them. The philosophy is: "If they act like us, they won't fight us."

The Hair: To a Red Savage, long hair is power. It is Medicine. The first thing the Agent does is order the hair cut. To shear a warrior is to castrate his spirit.

The Schools: The children are taken. They are sent to boarding schools in the East.

They are forbidden to speak their language.

They are given Gorean names (Valerius, Marcus).

They are taught that their fathers are ignorant savages.

The Religion: The Sun Dance is banned. The Medicine Bundles are confiscated or burned.

The Result: A generation that belongs nowhere. They are not White Men (who despise them), and they are no longer Red Savages (who do not know them). They are ghosts in their own land.

◈═══════════════════════◈

V. The Survivors: The Secret Resistance (50-55 Mins)

Magistrate Evans: Is the victory total? Not quite.

Even in the Reservation, the fire burns low.

The Night Ceremonies: They hold the dances in secret, deep in the canyons where the Agent cannot see.

The Oral Tradition: Grandmothers whisper the stories to the children in the dark, keeping the language alive.

The Memory: As long as one man remembers the smell of the buffalo grass, the tribe is not dead. It is just sleeping.

VI. Conclusion & Assignment (55-60 Mins)

(Action: Set the shears down next to the flour.)

Magistrate Evans: This brings us to the end of the Red Savages. It is a story of a magnificent flame extinguished by the cold logic of bureaucracy. The Cavalry conquered the body. The Agent conquered the stomach. The School conquered the mind.

As Administrators, you will deal with conquered peoples. You must decide: Do you want subjects who hate you? Or partners who respect you? The Reservation creates hate. And hate, like a seed, waits for the rain.

(Action: Pick up the assignment scroll.)

Magistrate Evans: Your Assignment for Week 7:

You are the Indian Agent for the Kaiila Reservation. It is Ration Day. Chief Lame Bull comes to you. He refuses to send his grandson to the school. He says: "If you take the boy, I will burn the warehouse."

The Task: Write an Incident Report (300 words).

The Dilemma: If you arrest the Chief, the tribe riots. If you let him keep the boy, you look weak.

The Solution: How do you diffuse this? (Do you use the flour as leverage? Do you lie to him?)

The Outcome: What happens to the boy?

Next week, in GOR 240, we begin our final module. The Pirates of Port Kar. We leave the land entirely and go to the chaotic, lawless marshes of the Tamber Gulf. We will study the Black Flag, the Tharlarion Ships, and the Code of the Brethren.

(Action: Sharp nod.)

Magistrate Evans: Class dismissed.

Tal.
