Here is the comprehensive lecture script for GOR 200, Week 7.
This lecture moves away from the ideologies of "Empire" and "Survival" to the cold, hard pragmatism of Economics. It discusses the soldiers who fight not for a flag, but for a paycheck. It is a lesson in risk management, contract law, and the dangers of outsourcing your defense.
Lecture Script: GOR 200 - History of the Ubarates
Instructor: Magistrate Kati Evans Location: Gorean College of Lara / Ar’s Station Educational Hall Week 7: The Mercenary Companies (War for Profit) Duration: Approx. 60 Minutes

I. Introduction: The Coin and the Blade (00-10 Mins)
(Action: The room is quiet. On the desk sits a heavy bag of coins—the prop from Week 9 of the 101 course—and a dagger. You pick up the bag and drop it. It lands with a heavy, dull thud next to the blade.)
Magistrate Evans: Tal.
We have spoken of Warriors who die for honor. We have spoken of defenders who starve for their Home Stone. We have spoken of the glory of the Scarlet Caste.
But glory is expensive. And honor is rare.
Most wars on Gor are not fought by heroes. They are fought by professionals. They are fought by men who do not care who sits on the throne, as long as the gold is heavy and the wine is red.
Today, we study the Mercenary Companies.
To the romantic, they are "Sell-Swords," men without souls. To the Ubar, they are a necessary evil. To the Magistrate, they are a liability that must be managed with an ironclad contract.
We will look at the Economics of Violence. We will analyze why a city would hire strangers to defend its walls. And we will study the catastrophic history of what happens when the payday is missed.
We will examine The Sack of Dietrich and the Code of the Golden Sword.
Open your ledgers. Today, war is a business.

II. The Industry of War: Why Hire a Mercenary? (10-25 Mins)
Magistrate Evans: Why do Mercenaries exist?
In a perfect Gorean city, every citizen is a soldier. Every man stands on the wall. This is the ideal. But in reality, citizens are busy. The Baker needs to bake. The Scribe needs to write. The Merchant needs to trade.
If you pull every man off his job to fight a border skirmish, your economy collapses.
So, you outsource.
The Advantages of the Company
Magistrate Evans: You hire a Free Company.
Professionalism: These men do nothing but fight. They are not farmers with spears. They are veterans. They march in step. They dig trenches. They know how to kill efficiently.
Speed: Raising a citizen levy takes weeks. Hiring a Mercenary Company takes as long as it takes to sign the check. They are "Ready-to-War."
Disposability: If a Mercenary dies, the city does not mourn. There are no widows weeping in your plaza. You simply stop paying his wage. It is callous, but politically convenient.
The Major Players
Magistrate Evans: There are famous companies on Gor.
The Company of the Golden Sword: Perhaps the most famous. High fees, but they honor their contracts.
The Iron Gauntlet: Known for siege warfare.
The Dietrich Men: Followers of the legendary Dietrich of Tarnburg (before his fall).
These are not gangs. They are corporations. They have Quartermasters, Scribes, Treasurers, and Captains. They carry their own mobile "Home Stone"—usually the standard of their Captain.

III. The Code of the Contract (25-40 Mins)
Magistrate Evans: Mercenaries are not lawless. In fact, they live by a stricter code than some cities. It is the Code of the Contract.
To a Mercenary, the Contract is his Home Stone.
(Action: Unroll a parchment containing a contract.)
Magistrate Evans: A standard Mercenary Contract includes:
The Retainer: Payment up front. (Usually 1/3).
The Looting Rights: Who gets the plunder? (Usually 50/50 split with the city).
The Duration: How long do they fight?
The "No-Switch" Clause: They swear not to accept a bribe from the enemy during the contract.
The Magistrate’s Warning: However, the loyalty exists only within the ink of that contract. On the day the contract expires... the Mercenary is a free agent. I have seen companies fight for a city on Monday, and against it on Tuesday, because the enemy offered a new contract the moment the old one ended.
This is why, when you hire Mercenaries, you never let them inside your inner walls. You keep them camped outside.

IV. Case Study: The Sack of Dietrich (40-50 Mins)
Magistrate Evans: What happens when the gold stops?
Let us look at the tragic history of Dietrich of Tarnburg.
Dietrich was a brilliant Mercenary Captain. He built a city—Tarnburg—based on the ideals of the Free Companies. A city of soldiers.
But he made a fatal error. He relied too heavily on men who fought only for coin, and not enough on men who fought for the soil.
The Crisis: During a harsh winter, the trade routes to Tarnburg were cut. The gold shipments were delayed. Dietrich stood before his men—men he had led for years—and asked them to fight on credit. He asked them to fight for loyalty.
The Betrayal: The men looked at Dietrich. They liked him. But they loved Gold more. They did not just leave. They realized that the richest thing left in the city was the city itself.
The Mercenaries turned. They sacked their own employer. They burned Tarnburg. They took the women. They stole the reserves.
The Lesson: A mercenary has no Home Stone. You cannot appeal to his patriotism. You can only appeal to his greed. If you run out of gold, you do not just lose an army; you gain a new enemy—one that is already inside your gates.
Ar's Solution: When Ar hires mercenaries, they use the Hostage System. They require the Captain of the Mercenaries to live in the Cylinder of Ar—lavishly, as a guest, but effectively a prisoner. If the Company turns, the Captain dies. Trust is good; leverage is better.

V. Conclusion & Assignment (50-60 Mins)
(Action: Pick up the dagger and slide it into the sheath next to the coins.)
Magistrate Evans: War for Profit is a dangerous game. It can save a city in the short term, but it rots the soul of the city in the long term.
If your citizens forget how to hold a spear because they are used to paying others to do it, your city is already dead. The Mercenaries will eventually realize they are the ones with the swords, and you are just the ones with the soft hands.
Use them. But do not rely on them.
(Action: Pick up the assignment scroll.)
Magistrate Evans: Your Assignment for Week 7:
You are the City Magistrate. The High Council wants to hire the Company of the Iron Gauntlet (500 Heavy Infantry) to defend the northern border.
Draft the Contract (200-300 words).
You must include clauses to protect the city from betrayal.
How do you pay them? (Lump sum? Monthly?)
What are the "Rules of Engagement"? (Can they loot local farms?)
Crucially: Insert a "Loyalty Clause" or a "Hostage Clause" to ensure they do not turn on you.
Make it legally binding. If your contract has a loophole, they will find it, and they will exploit it with steel.
Next week, in GOR 200, Week 8, we move from the battlefield to the shadows. We discuss The Shadow War. We will study the Caste of Assassins, the spies, and the cipher-breakers. War by other means.
(Action: Sharp nod.)
Magistrate Evans: Class dismissed.
Tal.
